She sees a variety of pets, including dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, rodents and other pocket pets and some reptiles. Her areas of interest include anesthesia, preventive care and behavior. In her time away from the clinic, she enjoys training and showing her dogs in obedience and agility competitions, growing orchids and running.
Dr. Michelle Curtis Velasco
Dr. Curtis graduated from Auburn University with her degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1978, and started her career in Zoological Medicine as the first fulltime staff veterinarian at the Jacksonville Zoo. She later worked in small animal private practice for several years before starting the Fleming Island Pet Clinic in 1988.While seeing a wide variety of pet exotic animals she developed a special interest in birds. After attending years of continuing education and seminars on avian medicine and surgery, she became Board Certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice in 1993, and later served as that organization’s president. The ABVP was one of the first specialty boards recognized by the AVMA to require recertification every 10 years, and Dr. Curtis passed the extensive examination process to be recertified in 2003.She spends her free time riding her horses and competing in Dressage riding, and enjoys staying at home with her 3 dogs, 5 cats, several pet birds and human family members, including her husband, Dr. Velasco.
Stacey has worked here at the Fleming Island Pet Clinic since 2005. Prior to joining our staff, Stacey lived in Virginia where she worked for other AAHA certified veterinary clinics for about five years. She also has experience from a veterinary emergency clinic. Stacey is currently enrolled in continuing education classes here as well in order to obtain her certification. When asked what areas of veterinary practice she enjoyed most, dentistry came to mind. Also Stacey says she enjoys the large variety of species and cases we see here every day. Stacey is married and has a teenage daughter. She has several animals spanning multiple species. There are two dogs (a Boxer named "Zeus" and a Boston Terrier,"Chopper"), three cats, and four birds. In her free time, Stacey enjoys playing pool and is also active with her church.
Linda is one of our technicians here at the Fleming Island Pet Clinic. She has been a staff member here since 2005 and has had many years of experience in the veterinary field. We’re not quite sure what is wrong with Linda, because only has one cat named "Luni", a bit of an oddity in this field! Linda is probably the most easy-going out of all of us and is known for her unique sense of humor. In her free time, she enjoys reading and cross-stitching. Linda shares her home with her husband. She also has a son and three grandchildren. Make sure to say hi to Linda next time you come in!
Shannon is one of our most experienced and devoted technicians. She has been a staff member here since 2001. Shannon has extensive experience in the field of veterinary medicine. Prior to joining us, she has worked with other veterinarians, including work at a specialty practice. Her technical skills are excellent and she is a very valuable member of our team. Shannon stays busy away from the clinic with her two girls and many pets (three dogs and four cats). She enjoys fishing, camping, all types of crafting, and is active in Girl Scouts.
Lisa is one of our amazing Certified Veterinary Technicians. She comes to us from an animal hospital in Virginia. She joined our hospital family in 2014 and brought with it her enthusiasm and expertise. She is a part of a Navy family. So they move around a lot. She has two dogs and a horse in her fur family. Her passion is horseback riding with her favorite equestrian sport being Eventing.
Allie is one of our sweet Certified Veterinary Technicians. She's been with our clinic family since 2015. She loves all animals and has a passion for dogs having two of her own. She enjoys playing with her dogs and taking long walks on the beach with them under the stars! Prior to joining our clinic, she worked at a western store and was in school for vet tech. She also enjoys line dancing in her free time.
You can see Cassidy's smile from a mile away with how she lights up the room. The animals really take to her with her friendly and open nature. She has been a technician with us since 2014. Prior to joining our hospital family, she's worked with a few different vets in the area and also at an animal rescue farm. She has a passion for rodeo with her horses and has a herd of cows, horses, dogs and cats in her fur family. Cassidy is excellent at educating our clients and has a special way with making animals both large and small feel at ease and happy.
Quick-witted and humorous, Cindy is a bright part of our family here at Fleming Island Pet & Bird Clinic. She has been going eleven years strong up front in reception. Yankee-born, Cindy hails from Pennsylvania. She enjoys growing her own food, cooking, making her pottery, singing her blue-grass music and singing harmony in a band that travels to different churches and events. She is very attentive to our client’s needs and quick to brighten your day with a joke. She shares her farm with her husband, son, three dogs, two cats, one Amazon parrot and a flock of chickens, which she calls “her girls.” Look for Cindy’s bright smile to welcome you as you come in the door.
If Kathy’s in the clinic when you come in, you probably know it (because you can hear her!) She is always ready to have a quick conversation with you or give a tour of the clinic. Kathy is our kennel manager, overseeing the care of the many dogs, cats, birds and other animals ‘on vacation’ with us. She also always manages to keep busy with many of the little things that can easily get overlooked in the day-to-day workings of the clinic. Kathy has worked at the Fleming Island Pet Clinic since 2002 and has an extensive background in animal care. Kathy lives in Orange Park and shares her home with her many dogs and multiple cats. Her favorite pasttime is visiting the beach and loves Scooby Doo.
Nicole is a compassionate and sweet receptionist. Her voice is always a cheerful one on the phone. She has grown up with animals on her parent’s apple orchard up in New Hampshire . Moving down here to be with her husband, who was in the Navy, she followed her passion of animals first managing a pet store. She then went into the medical field by starting as a receptionist and then a technician at animal hospitals in the area. She then took some time off to study the art of dog grooming. Fate led her to us here at the Fleming Island Pet & Bird Clinic, where we are happy to count her as part of the family. She has been with the clinic since 2007. She shares her home with five cats, two dogs, two horses and her husband. She is in school pursuing a business degree. When not a work Nicole is busy with her personal business.
Stephanie has a bright smile for every pet and person that comes to visit our hospital. Sweet and helpful, she was very excited to join our team and get to work with animals. She moved down here from Tennessee with her family, dogs and cat. We're very happy to have her with us.
Vicki is always ready with a smile when you bring your pets in. She has a love of cattle dogs and has several, a cat and her horse. She helps out in lots of different spots of our hospital. You can see her up behind the front desk and also helping to care for the pets staying with us. When she's not helping us, she's busy with her own personal business of custom pet bandanas.
PB is one chill cat. Also goes by the names of Pretty Boy, Peanut Butter, Phat Boy and Peebee Jeebees. PB is our Counter Manager at the front desk. His duties include sleeping on his favorite stuffed duck, sunbathing in the windows, rubbing up on files and stepping on any keyboard that someone is working on. He's a sweet boy and loves to be petted. He enjoys greeting people and supervising. PB lives here because he has seizures but they are controlled with medication. Be sure to say hi to him when you visit us!
Devon is always watching (except when he's sleeping!) He is fabled to be a long, lost cousin of the famous Grumpy Cat but we can neither confirm or deny this fact. He's super handsome and friendly always looking for a pet from his favorite humans. He is our resident Guard Cat and can be seen patrolling the halls, pharmacy, doctor's office and the lobby. Devon hails from a horse barn, where he affectionately would rub up on the horses. Unfortunately, the horses wouldn't always see him and he was accidentally stepped on, not once but twice. We treated his leg both times. He enjoyed his recovery so much with us that he decided to stay and became part of the family!
Winston, fondly known as Winnie, is our receptionist-in-training. She is a Yellow-Nape Amazon parrot and likes greeting pets and their owners. She has quite a large vocabulary and also enjoys singing. Some of which is: 'Can I have your last name? Good morning. May I help you? Okay. Hello. School's Out! Good bye. Amazing Grace (which comes out Amazing Gra...,) Fuzzy Wuzzy, Lumberjack Song and Can I go to the bathroom?' Check her out the next time that you visit.
Gator is our beautiful Green Wing Macaw. She is sweet and comical clown enjoying making people laugh by dancing and showing off her pretty wings. Giving kisses is a favorite of hers. She is a little shy with talking, what we call a closet talker. She'll wait until everyone else leaves the room before you hear her start talking to herself. She came from the Gator Farm, where she was a show bird. Unfortunately, her wing was bitten by a baby Caiman Alligator. Needing lots of ongoing care, our hospital adopted her and she ended up having to get her wing partially amputated. She is still a very beautiful girl and it doesn't slow her down at all.
Very friendly and knowledgable!
We have been going to the clinic for over three years now, since the day we brought our pound puppies home. They have had multiple visits to the clinic from rashes, to knee surgery. The staff at the clinic is incredible and I tell everyone I can.
As bird owners, we are encouraged to find a pet clinic which can and does address the concerns that we have regarding Bandit.
Our veterinarian, Dr. Antar, is the absolute best! She has stood by us through some truly difficult times and I couldn't imagine trusting my pets with someone else at this point.
Friendly and clean environment. Dr. Lowry is truly an expert, she provides good and useful information on every visit.
You are kind, considerate, knowledgeable. You always are kind and treat my pet with consideration of feelings and I always feel better when I leave. I always recommend your clinic to everyone that has a pet. Thank you for being so kind.
You were the only vet that would see Pretty. So we will be keeping her there. She was in pain and you were the only ones that helped her.
We've had multiple visits and have boarded Bandit for the past 4+ years. Never had any problems or left with more questions than answers. Had a couple urgent bird issues (illness/injury) that were handled expertly and with greatest care by all.
Your staff and vet are outstanding!
The visit involved boarding our pet. However, I am always pleased with the service, staff, care and attention.
Because you have been taking care of our pets since 2002 and I trust no one else to do so.
I have been a client of Fleming Island Pet Clinic since 2000. The doctors and staff are wonderful and caring. I have taken all three of my dogs there for routine care, injuries and even end of life care for my best friend Lucky Dog.
You have taken great care of my pets over the last 15 years or longer and I have never had a problem with anyone there. Dr. Lowry is the nicest, most compassionate veterinarian I know.
Have been visiting this Vet for Over 25 years. Great staff!
Caring, courteous, and professional. Because of this we travel over an hour to get there.
There is an emphasis on client education and customer service. The facility is the cleanest I've ever seen and the veterinarians are up to date on all the latest techniques.
We've been bringing our pets to y'all for years and will continue to do so for years to come. Everyone is always so friendly, and they definitely care about their patients.
The doctors and staff, in the many years I have been bringing my pets to your clinic, have always treated us and our pets with the greatest care, courtesy and expertise.
Being new pet owners we had basic questions regarding bathing, food & shots. All of our questions were not just answered but also in a way that we could understand.
Love the atmosphere at the location. Felt already part of the family!
Dr. Curtis was wonderful! It was very professional but at the same time, I felt comfortable to ask questions and even joke!
Outstanding Service - Tour was great! Thank you for the "tic" bath for Chloe! Starter kit was very nice.
I had a puppy and the Tech that was the one to help us had just helped a diseased animal and didn't want to contaminate him. I was appreciative of the concern.
You have been very consistent with your care over the many years I have taken my pets here.
I was beyond impressed with the facility and staff. I was very comfortable leaving my bunny "Karl" there for her surgery. The facility was clean and the staff was friendly and well-trained. I loved Dr. Lowry. She was personable and had a "great bed-side manner" with the patient's owners! I only wished that I lived closer so that I could come all the time with all my pets.
Chaz was boarded for 4 nights and I knew he would be in good hands.
I've been using this pet clinic for more than 20 years and myself and my babies have always been treated with love, concern and extreme consideration! I have and always will recommend this clinic to all my friends, family and anyone else!
Very receptive and attentive staff, we look forward to seeing you often!
I rate you as 5 Star! I know I can board my feathered friend and leave town on vacation confident that he will receive the best care! If any health emergency did arise, Dr. Curtis would be there to help him!
I was impressed with how professional and clean the building is. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and seemed to really care about my pet and assisting me to provide the best care. I feel my pet will be safe under the care of this facility.
For all of the reasons I stated Strongly Agree in the statements above. Could not be happier with the attention and care my pets have received! Staff across the board are top notched.
I have total confidence in Dr. Curtis from the way she handles our beloved parrot, to the thoroughness of exams and recommendations to maintain his good health. The staff is very friendly and also extremely competent.
We have been taking our pets to Fleming Island Pet Clinic for many years. We have been very satisfied with the services that our pets have received.
I felt the vet tech and doctor had shown love for my pet and put my mind at ease and if no improvement then come back sooner, and my Elvis (bird) did recover from a sprang leg. I will be coming back for my feathered friends.
You guys are a wonderful and caring team... thank you for all you do.
